Modern Foreign Languages

Our intent is to inspire pupils to have a passion for life-long language learning. We want to broaden our students’ horizons and promote an understanding of cultural differences. We aim to develop successful linguists capable of communicating with native speakers in speech and writing, enabling them to travel, experience other lifestyles and open the world up to them.

You live a new life for every new language you speak. If you know only one language, you live only once

In years 7, 8 and 9 we will build on the foundations of language learning laid at Primary School. Pupils study either French or Spanish in KS3, depending on their year group.  All students within a year group study the same language, focusing on that one language to allow for deeper knowledge and understanding. We help pupils to develop a secure knowledge of how languages are structured by teaching carefully selected core vocabulary and grammatical structures, whilst embedding the sound-writing relationship. By doing this, we promote technical accuracy and automaticity by teaching key vocabulary and tenses or other structures which convey the present, past and future in a number of different contexts. We practice and develop listening, speaking, reading, writing, dictation and translation skills throughout KS3 in order to prepare pupils for the four assessment areas in KS4.

In years 10 and 11 we teach students how to apply the knowledge gained in KS3 and re-visit the core foundations in greater depth to enable pupils to meet the demands of GCSE Modern Foreign Languages. We guide pupils to develop the ability to communicate confidently and coherently with native speakers in speech and writing. Pupils acquire new knowledge, skills and ways of thinking through the ability to understand and respond to a range of spoken and written material, and demonstrate a mastery of a range of vocabulary and structures.

The Exam Board we study is AQA.

Students will sit four separate exams:

Speaking Exam (25%)

Listening Exam (25%)

Reading Exam (25%)

Writing Exam (25%)

Students will study three different themes containing a variety of topics, such as family & relationships, healthy living, holidays, school life & future careers. They will also learn how to communicate using the past, present and future tenses and be introduced to real life situations. We include regular culture lessons in our teaching so that students learn about the lifestyle of different countries and gain an insight into the culture as well as the language.
