World and Religious Studies
The deepest of all desires for knowledge is the desire to know what the world is for and what we are for
G.K. Chesterton
Key Stage 3 World Studies aims to introduce and discover the communities around us starting with understanding our local community and the British communities. This curriculum has been developed to broaden students’ understanding of the world around us by looking at six main faiths and discussing wider debate questions that consider opinions from around the world. Year 9 students study themes with big questions such as peace and conflict which allow students to understand what they view online and in the media. We intend to make every student informed and knowledgeable to be able to make judgements using clear facts.
Key Stage 4 Religious and World Studies has been developed through two strands. The core offer to all our students looks at themes such as prejudice which will continue the work from KS3 and allow students to debate significant themes with knowledge and facts to reach developed decisions on these matters. At Middlewich High School we also offer the opportunity for students to gain a GCSE in Religious Education focusing on themes and two major religions; Christianity and Buddhism. This course is designed to understand scripture and teaching, practices and beliefs as well as religious views on major world themes.
The Exam Board we study is AQA.
Students will sit two 1 hour 45 minute written exam papers at the end of Year 11.
Paper 1: The study of religions: beliefs, teachings and practices; Christianity and Buddhism
Paper 2: Thematic studies; Religion and life; Religion, peace and conflict; Religion, crime and punishment; Religion, human rights and social justice.
